Quick answer

“Umrah’s core sequence is: enter ihram with intention at or before the relevant miqat; perform Tawaf around the Kaaba; perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah; then leave ihram (tahallul), which usually involves shortening or shaving the hair according to your school of thought. This page is orientation for UK travellers so you can time flights and hotels. It is not a fatwa. Confirm details with a qualified scholar. Trip to Makkah does not issue religious rulings.”

People search “how to perform Umrah” before they buy tickets, which is the right order. Learn the outline so ihram at the miqat does not surprise you at 35,000 feet, and so you do not book a hotel you cannot walk from between Tawaf and Fajr. Then use the Umrah guide for packages and hotel distance for the walk.

We will not write a 40-step madhhab mash-up. Where Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali practice differ — women’s ihram, what is forbidden in ihram, how much hair to cut — ask a teacher who knows your practice. A travel website that “settles” those points is performing, not helping.

Before you leave the UK

Take a local class if you can. Read one trusted booklet from your masjid, not five conflicting reels. Pack ihram as your teacher advises. Pack walking sandals you have already worn. Documents and medicines sit on the checklist even though that list is Hajj-titled — the document logic is the same.

If you fly from Heathrow or Manchester, ask your airline how they announce the miqat. Then still follow your teacher’s view on when to enter ihram, especially on routes that cross the miqat while you are asleep.

The sequence, at logistics level

  1. 1Miqat and ihram. Enter ihram at or before the miqat for your routing. UK flights often involve entering ihram on the aircraft. Follow the briefing and your scholarly advice. Niyyah is not a PA announcement — it is yours.
  2. 2Arrival. Jeddah usually means a road transfer to Makkah. Rest if you can before Tawaf if your group is exhausted; some teachers prefer proceeding sooner. That is fiqh plus fitness — decide before you land, not in the bus aisle.
  3. 3Tawaf. Seven circuits of the Kaaba. Crowds, heat and wheelchair routes are the logistics. Conditions of validity are for your scholar. Do not let a package “guide” rush you into a crowd you cannot handle.
  4. 4Sa’i. Seven legs between Safa and Marwah. Buggies and wheelchairs exist; ask your group leader where they start. Hydration matters more than filming.
  5. 5Tahallul. Leaving ihram, typically involving hair. Men’s and women’s practice differs. Confirm barbers vs cutting a small amount before you travel, especially if you will not use a hotel salon.

What a UK package “guide” usually is

On many groups, the “religious guide” is a crowd manager who knows meeting points. That can be valuable. It is not automatically a mufti. Ask who they are and whether they will teach or only marshal. See what an Umrah package includes.

Madinah

Visiting al-Masjid an-Nabawi is central for many UK groups. It is not a substitute for the Makkah rites. Build nights on purpose. A 36-hour Madinah stop after a draining Makkah week is how people remember only the coach.

Not a fatwa

If this outline disagrees with your teacher, your teacher wins. We would rather lose a keyword ranking than publish a hybrid rite that nobody’s school accepts.

Frequently asked questions

How do you perform Umrah step by step?

Ihram with intention at the miqat, Tawaf, Sa’i, then tahallul. Confirm each condition with a scholar. Use this page for sequencing and travel timing only.

Can I perform Umrah in one day?

The rites can be completed in hours if crowds allow. A UK trip still needs flights, hotels and recovery. Do not plan a 24-hour stunt with elderly relatives.

Where do I enter ihram on a flight from London?

At or before the miqat for your air route. Use the airline briefing plus your teacher. Do not improvise from a map on Wi-Fi at 4 a.m.

Do women perform Umrah the same way?

The high-level sequence is shared; ihram clothing, crowd strategy and some rulings differ. Ask a female teacher or your local scholar. We will not invent a paragraph that pretends all women travel in one way.

Do I need a scholar on the package?

Not as a visa rule. Many families still want knowledgeable company. Ask what the person will actually do.

Plan the rites, then the rooms

Once you know how you will enter ihram and how far you can walk, we can match hotels and flights without pretending to be your imam.
