Quick answer

“Pay Hajj and Umrah deposits only to an identifiable UK business, against written terms that name hotels, occupancy, dates and flights. A Hajj place is booked through official Nusuk Hajj — GOV.UK says so. ATOL protects qualifying flight-inclusive packages; it does not certify religious quality or walking distance. Do not send large cash sums, crypto, or personal-account transfers to social-media ‘agents’. If a price sits far below every dated example you can check, treat it as a warning.”

Trip to Makkah · ATOL & IATA protected UK agency · August 2026

This is the trust page for every other guide we publish. Trip to Makkah is an IATA agency; flight-inclusive bookings that qualify sit under CAA ATOL. That is still not a reason to skip paperwork. The people who lose money on pilgrimage usually skipped a boring step: company name, invoice, ATOL number, hotel names, refund clause.

GOV.UK’s pilgrimage advice exists because fraud around Hajj and Umrah is not theoretical. We would rather you read this before you send a screenshot of a “today only” deal to the family WhatsApp.

The official Hajj rule, in one paragraph

Direct answer: Current GOV.UK wording is that you can only book a Hajj place through official Nusuk Hajj. A UK agency may arrange flights and hotels. It cannot sell you a secret extra quota. Full process: how to book Hajj from the UK.

Umrah is a different legal pathway. Scammers still use the same pressure tactics. Keep Umrah visa UK and this safety page together when you pay an Umrah deposit.

What ATOL does — and the sentence people skip

ATOL is financial protection for qualifying flight-inclusive package travel sold in the UK. If the ATOL holder fails, there is a defined protection route via the CAA framework. What ATOL does not do: inspect Mina tents, bless a hotel’s “2-minute walk”, or prove that a Facebook page is a real company.

Ask for the ATOL number on the invoice and a certificate for your booking. Match the number to CAA resources. A logo in a footer is not a certificate.

Red flags we see on UK pilgrimage sales

  1. 1Pay today in cash, crypto, or to a personal bank account “because the company account is frozen”.
  2. 2No UK company address, no Companies House trail you can explain, no written hotel names.
  3. 3A Hajj price far below every dated example in our Hajj 2027 cost table, with no occupancy or shifting explanation.
  4. 4“Guaranteed Hajj” that never mentions Nusuk.
  5. 5Reviews that cannot be tied to a booking reference, or pressure not to tell your family until after you pay.
  6. 6Visa “guaranteed in 24 hours” for a sovereign decision.

A deposit checklist you can copy

Before money moves Pass / fail
Invoice in a company name you can search Fail = stop
Hotels named, occupancy named, dates named Fail = stop
Flights: airport, bags, or clearly land-only Fail = stop
Refund / change language for visa or Nusuk failure Fail = high risk
ATOL number if flights are bundled Fail = stop for flight-inclusive
You keep copies, not just the agent’s phone Fail = stop

If you are comparing Umrah packages or Hajj packages, run this grid on every operator, including us.

How to talk to relatives who found a “deal”

Do not start with “it is a scam”. Start with the grid. Many painful bookings were not criminal — they were vague: different hotel, different occupancy, different airport. The safety failure is the missing document, not always a fake company. Ask your cousin to forward the invoice, not the Instagram story.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check ATOL for a Hajj or Umrah package?

Take the ATOL number from the paperwork and check it through CAA ATOL resources. Confirm the certificate matches this booking, not a previous year’s leaflet.

Is a cheap Umrah package a scam?

Not automatically. It may be a distant hotel and quad sharing. It becomes a problem if the seller will not put hotels and flights in writing. See hotel distance and Umrah cost.

Should I pay a deposit on WhatsApp?

Only after you have a proper invoice from a named company and a traceable payment to that company — not to an individual. Chat is not a contract archive. Save PDFs.

Can Trip to Makkah guarantee my Hajj place?

No. Hajj places go through Nusuk. We help with travel quotes. Anyone who guarantees an off-platform place is a red flag.

What if I already paid cash?

Keep every message and receipt. Seek advice from a citizens advice service or solicitor if the amount is significant. We cannot unwind someone else’s cash deal from a blog comment.

Book with paperwork, not pressure

Ask us for a written quote. Compare it with Nusuk (for Hajj) and GOV.UK. That order is the whole method.
